The Elements of Style

My business name and my Blog name (Elements) is a word I can not escape....It defines my style.
Its one of those words that can be added to most of my sentences when I am describing how to bring different looks ,items or feels together.
That's right, as long as you mix Elements I think you can get one major style happening for you and your home that then becomes personal.
You can get any interior designer or decorator to come in to your home and tell  you how to put your home or room together that a magazine will want to take a photo of (if they are good at what they do).
But if they are fantastic at what they do they will try and incorporate something personal from you and generally its 1 Element that will do it.
If you are the decorator then you may know what I am talking about.

It could be wood, metal, texture, colour or a piece of furniture or home wares but it is that 1 Element that makes your style evolve into your own.
I would say it could also be an antique or vintage piece that you want to mix with your other contemporary items...they can work, don't right them off before trying.
It could possibly become your launching pad to having the confidence to take on your own room decor makeover.
Let me use the image below as an example...
Soft full curtains with a slightly masculine feel
Granite Fire place fabric window seat and leather sofa
Fur Cushions
Wood Table
Plastic dining chairs
and
Flowers
A complete mix of different Elements but together they make the room personal and homely.

Some of the major stylists have recognised that its also a reflection of the times that we will be mixing our Elements of designing styles. The trend will be to mix and match the old stuff that is still useful with new accessories that are affordable and add a little something to the space. Excessive and extravagant spending of cash and throwing away everything old as it does not match the new look will be a thing of the past.

In general, there will be a trend to carefully create a 'anything goes' approach, going forward it's all about the mix and how you combine individual, these elements. The right classic 19th century piece will mix with certain vintage finds from the '70s and '80s and with pieces designed this year. This whole thought process will help define more opted home styles and stop this one way of decorating idea.

Now, go forward with conviction in your style and decorate with a knowledge that its possible that anything goes.
Within reason ;)
